Intro – Yes, You Can!
If you’ve ever thought learning the piano without sheet music was too hard, here’s your proof it’s not. In less than 15 minutes, you can be playing “Lean On Me” — one of the most beloved, soulful songs ever written — using nothing but your ears, your hands, and a little bit of patience.
Why This Matters
“Lean On Me” by Bill Withers is built on simple, repeating chord patterns — a perfect first step into the world of playing by ear. Once you learn it, you’ll start recognizing the same chord shapes in dozens of other songs.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Listen First
Pull up the original recording.
Hum the bass notes (lowest sound) in each chord change — don’t worry about being perfect.
2. Find the Starting Note
On the piano, play single notes until you match the first bass note of the song.
For most versions, that note will be a C.
3. Build the Chords
Start with C major (C–E–G), then move to F major (F–A–C), and G major (G–B–D).
4. Add the Melody Note on Top
For the opening verse, play each chord so the highest note (far right) is the melody note, with the other two chord tones stacked below it.
C major → C on top (melody), G and E below → E–G–C
F major → D on top (melody), A and F below → F–A–D
G major → E on top (melody), B and G below → G–B–E
A minor → F on top (melody), C and A below → A–C–F
5. Feel the Pattern
The verse follows: C → F → C → F → C → G → C.
Play slowly until switching feels natural.
6. Add the Singing
Sing the first line: “Sometimes in our lives…”
Match your right-hand top note to the melody you’re singing.

Pro Tips
Start with block chords before adding rhythmic patterns.
Slow the song down with YouTube’s playback speed tool.
Record yourself playing along with the track to hear timing adjustments.
Practice Challenge
Play the first verse and chorus using the melody-on-top method, then try it for a friend and see if they recognize it immediately.
